Affordable Living in a Historic Shaw Building
The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA operates an independent living facility that houses low-income, formerly homeless women (84 affordable permanent supportive housing units). 54 of the 84 units have private baths and kitchenettes and 30 units were renovated as single room occupancy units. The building has community spaces, updated laundry facilities, green outdoor space, a large multi-purpose room, and office and meeting space for the on-site provision of supportive services. The renovated building features solar panels and upgraded energy and water fixtures to help the property run more efficiently and result in significant energy savings above pre-renovation levels.
